Practicing Data Wrangling with DaVinci Resolve

This guide will walk you through practicing on-set data wrangling using Davinci Resolve in the Intermediate-level Hands-On Rig Practice tech seminar. 

Data Wrangling with DaVinci Resolve

To practice securely and reliably cloning your media to your external drives:

  1. Locate the two Samsung solid state drives (SSDs) on the left side of the cart.

  3. Locate the memory cards with the red tape. There will be one CFast2.0 card and one SD card.CFast2.0 card with red tape labeled A001 in a case.SD card with red tape labeled Day 01 in a case.

  4. Remove the red tape from both cards and insert them into their card readers.

    1. Note: The SD card goes in the gray and white Kingston multi card reader. The CFast 2.0 card goes in the black Xcellon single card reader. Inserting the CFast2.0 card into the Xcellon single card reader.Inserting the SD card into the Kingston multi card reader.

  5. On the computer, open each drive in a Finder window. Finder windows of the IntPractice001 and IntPractice002 drives side by side on a desktop.

  6. For both drives, double-click on the DAY-01_230127.zip template to extract a clean copy of the folder structure template. DAY-01_230127 folder extracted from the zip file in both the finder windows.

  7. Rename the new folder with a new day number (e.g. DAY-02) and today's date (format: year-month-day). Renaming the folder to "DAY-02_230202".

  8. Inside the renamed folder on one of the SSDs, open the CAM_A folder. Right click inside it and choose New Folder.Selecting "New Folder" from the right click menu inside the CAM_A folder from the DAY-02_230202 folder.

  9. Name the new folder A001.Renaming the new folder "A001".

  10. Repeat for the other drive so that both drives have an A001 folder. IntPractice001 and IntPractice002 finder windows side by side with the same folder structure.

  11. Launch DaVinci Resolve from the Dock. DaVinci Resolve Icon highlighted in the app dock.

  12. In the Project window, double-click on Untitled Project. The DaVinci Resolve launch window. An untitled project is selected.

  13. At the bottom of the window, navigate to the Media workspace. Media tab selected at the bottom of the window in DaVinci Resolve.

  14. In the Media workspace, click on the Clone Tool button in the top left corner to open the Clone Tool.Location of the Clone Tool in DaVinci Resolve.

  15. In the Clone Tool, click the Add Job button twice to create two new clone jobs. Clone Jobs window in the Clone Tool.

  16.  Drag the CANON volume from the Media Storage section on the left side of the interface into the Source section of Clone Job 1.

  17. Repeat with the 633 SD volume, dragging it to the Source section of Clone Job 2."633 SD" volume being dragged from the left side of the interface to the Source section of Clone Job 2.

  18. Drag the A001 folder from one of the SSDs into the Destination section of Job 1.   19. Drag the AUDIO folder from one of the SSDs into the Destination section of Job 2. Repeat with the AUDIO folder on the other SSD.   20. Click on Job 1 to select it (the job will be outlined in white when selected). Shift-click on Job 2 to also select it. Both jobs will now be outlined white. Job 1 and Job 2 both selected and outlined in white in Clone Job window.

  21. Click the Clone button to begin cloning. Clone button in the Clone Job window.

  22. When complete, clear the clone queue by selecting the in the top right corner of the Clone Tool. The clone tool job tab with the green completed signal in the top right corner.

  23. Play back a couple of the clips from the SSDs (not the memory cards) in DaVinci to spot check for quality. Video clip playing in the Playback window.Audio clip playing in the Playback window.

  24. If everything looks good, eject both memory cards and place a green piece of tape on them. A CFast2.0 card with green tape labeled "A002".
